UPDATE: On 12/28/14 at about 8:15 a.m. Maui Police Department personnel met with the EOD team from Oahu, to coordinate the safe removal of the unexploded ordnance located on the beach located at North Kihei Road near Mile Marker 2. The unexploded ordnance was identified as a M301A3 81 millimeter mortar illumination round. It was safely transported to the c Firing range for safe detonation. The beach front was reopened at about 9:30 a.m. The mortar was detonated without incident. (See also - https://fenix-insight.online/event/93/)
