A suicide bomb attack on St George Church (Mar Girgis) in Tanta city, killed 29 people on 9 April. IS claimed the attack on behalf of IS Egypt, not the group's so-called Sinai Province affiliate which has been behind the majority of IS activity in Egypt, primarily in North Sinai. The Egyptian Interior Ministry had said that an explosive device was behind the blast though DNA evidence later revealed the identity of the suicide bomber. At least 78 people were wounded in Tanta.
