A piece of ordnance found by a diver in waters off of Maui on Saturday, has since been safely removed and detonated. Maui Police say the ordnance, identified as a M301A3 81 millimeter mortar illumination round was safely transported to the Ukumehame Firing range for safe detonation. The beach front near Mile 2 of North Kīhei Road was reopened at about 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014. Police say the mortar was detonated without incident. Maui Police Department personnel met with the EOD team from Oʻahu this morning to coordinate the safe removal of the device. (Original post: 12/27/14) An emergency ordnance disposal unit was dispatched to the shoreline near Mile 2 of North Kīhei Road following the discovery of a suspected piece of unexploded ordnance on Saturday afternoon. Police say a male individual reported finding what he though to be an unexploded ordinance while diving in waters off of North Kihei Road at around 2:12 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014. Police say the individual brought the suspected ordinance out of the water and placed in on the shoreline of the beach. Following the report, police blocked the beach area approximately one hundred feet in all directions. No roadways were effected as a result of the incident. Crews from the Department of Land and Natural Resources and an emergency ordnance disposal unit team from Oʻahu were contacted. The scene was later turned over to DLNR. The estimated arrival time of the emergency ordnance disposal unit was unknown at last report. (See also - https://fenix-insight.online/event/95/)
