During an armed robbery of Thawara Mobile Shop on the downhill road at the foot of Yankin Mountain in Patheingyi, three people including shop owner U Aung Myo Thant were shot dead; suspects have not yet been arrested
Yangon, November 6
Local residents told Yangon Khit Thit News that during an armed robbery of Thawara Mobile Shop on the downhill road at the foot of Yankin Mountain in Patheingyi Township, Mandalay Region, three people, including the shop owner U Aung Myo Thant, were shot and killed, and the perpetrators have not yet been apprehended.
At approximately 1:30 p.m. on November 5, an armed robbery gang entered and robbed Thawara Mobile Shop on the downhill road at the foot of Yankin Mountain in Patheingyi Township. During the robbery, the robbers shot and killed the shop owner, U Aung Myo Thant. He was shot in the head and died instantly at the scene.
After the robbery, the robbers fled on motorcycles. The shop owner's uncle, U Maung, and U Phelone pursued them by car in an attempt to apprehend them. The robbery gang opened fire on their vehicle and also threw a hand grenade into the car. Although the grenade failed to explode, the uncle and the other man later died from gunshot wounds.
Following the incident, at around 3:40 p.m., large numbers of military council personnel arrived near 19th Street and Kan Lal Road in Patheingyi and conducted searches and security operations. Several individuals considered suspicious were detained and taken away.
A local resident said:
"The robbery at the phone shop in Patheingyi Township left three people dead. The owner was shot first, in the head. Then his uncle pursued the robbers by car. There were three people in the car and two of them died. The shop owner, U Aung Myo Thant of Thawara Mobile Shop, was the first to die after being shot in the head. The robbers fired at all three people in the pursuing vehicle. When one of them was unable to fire his weapon, he threw a hand grenade into the car. Because it did not explode, Ko Phelone was still alive immediately after the shooting. He later died while receiving treatment in hospital. The funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. today. The body is still being transported on the road."
