Despite the Thai military summoning and warning the Myanmar military attaché, artillery shells from the Myanmar side continue to fall into Thailand; Thai military fires warning illumination rounds
Yangon, November 4
Thai media reported that despite the Thai military having summoned and warned the Myanmar military attaché and having sent formal protest letters to the Myanmar authorities in Naypyitaw, artillery shells fired during fighting on the Myanmar side again landed inside Thailand, prompting the Thai military to fire warning illumination rounds.
At approximately 7:15 p.m. on November 3, an RPG round fired from the Myanmar side landed in the rice barn of Damrun Sanwongsa, located in a village within Mae Sot Township, Tak Province, Thailand. It is understood that the incident caused no injuries or deaths.
Following the incident, the Thai military fired warning illumination artillery rounds toward the Myanmar side. The Thai side stated that the action was carried out in accordance with the Rules of Engagement (ROE) governing the use of military force to protect Thailand's sovereignty and the security of people living in the border area.
Earlier on the morning of November 3, General Chaiyapruek Dongpraphat, Secretary-General of Thailand's National Security Council (NSC), said that the Myanmar military attaché had been summoned and warned because artillery shells from fighting on the Myanmar side had fallen into Thailand, causing impacts on the lives and property of the public.
In addition, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, the Royal Thai Armed Forces, and the National Security Council, formal protest letters and notifications were sent to the Myanmar authorities in Naypyitaw, requesting measures to prevent further impacts on Thailand resulting from military activities near the border.
Chaiyapruek said that Thailand has deployed military personnel and equipment where necessary and has prepared security forces for border security near Mae Sot Township, which is directly opposite Myawaddy Township in Myanmar.
Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Armed Forces General Ukarit Buntanon met with the Myanmar military attaché, and Chaiyapruek stated that the military attaché pledged to coordinate and cooperate with forces on the ground.
Although cooperation between the two countries remains generally good, he warned that because fighting near the border remains intense, ground forces must exercise particular caution when using artillery. He also pointed out that even a slight error in aiming artillery could cause shells to land inside Thai territory.
The Ministry of Interior of Thailand is also carrying out assistance and compensation efforts for local residents affected by damage resulting from the border fighting. In addition, contingency plans have been prepared to ensure that residents of high-risk border areas can be evacuated in a timely manner in the event of an emergency.
Thai authorities are continuing to monitor the military situation on the Myanmar side and will continue to implement necessary security measures to protect the lives and property of Thai citizens living along the border.
