Father and son from Gangaw returning for mother's funeral killed by landmine

Miro, November 6, Gangaw

According to local residents, a father and son who were returning to Gangaw Township in Magway Region for the funeral of the father's mother struck a landmine. The son died at the scene, while the father died while receiving medical treatment.

Ko Aung Myo Lwin, a man in his forties living in Yangon, and his 10-year-old son arrived in Gangaw Township at about 6:30 p.m. on November 4 to attend the funeral of his mother in his native village of Mauk. When they arrived at the entrance checkpoint to Gangaw town, which was controlled by Infantry Battalion (50) under the military council and Pyu Saw Htee forces, they were stopped.

Because the military council and the Pyu Saw Htee group did not allow them to pass through the town, they began walking from Gangaw to Mauk village. While doing so, they struck a landmine planted by revolutionary forces near Sain Tu Bridge.

As a result of the explosion, the 10-year-old child sustained shrapnel wounds to the chest and groin and died instantly at the scene.

The father, Ko Aung Myo Lwin, suffered severe injuries to his head, abdomen, and leg. Local residents transported him to a nearby clinic for treatment, but he died on the morning of November 5.

A local man from Gangaw Township said: “Military Council Infantry Battalion (50) has been conducting military movements along the northern Gangaw routes. On the other side, there are also defensive minefields being laid. In this case, the father and son effectively became test subjects for the Infantry Battalion (50) military group. We feel sorry that this happened. For their family, one tragedy has been followed by another.”

It is reported that the bodies of the father and son who were killed by the landmine were taken by local residents yesterday to Mauk village, where the mother's funeral was taking place.
