One person, Gursewak Singh, was killed and two others, Harkirat Singh and Sajanpreet Singh, seriously injured after transporter Manjit Singh Katta allegedly opened fire at a car on Asal Road in Khemkaran, Tarn Taran District, on October 28, reports The Tribune. A video purportedly showing the shooting has gone viral on social media. According to sources, Katta was returning home with his wife after visiting a shrine in Ghariala when another vehicle allegedly began following his car. Near Mehndipur crossing, close to a railway crossing, he allegedly opened fire, injuring all three occupants. Gursewak later succumbed to his injuries, while the other two were admitted to a private hospital. Katta claimed the occupants were involved in extortion, while the victims’ side alleged he fired without provocation. Superintendent of Police (SP) (Headquarters) Sukhninder Singh said a case had been registered against Katta and his brother, Sandeep Singh, adding that Katta had been receiving extortion threats from gangsters.|Gangster Ashish Chopra alias Bhuvnesh Chopra, a native of Ferozepur, died under mysterious circumstances at Hoshiarpur District Jail late on October 27, reports The Tribune. He was taken to the Civil Hospital after his health deteriorated, but doctors declared him brought dead. The exact cause of death remains unclear and is expected to be established through a post-mortem examination and further investigation. Chopra was deported to India and arrested at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi in March 2026 with the assistance of central agencies. He was wanted in several criminal cases, including the 2024 triple murder in Ferozepur and alleged drug trafficking. Several First Information Report (FIRs) had reportedly been registered against him in Ferozepur, Fazilka and Patiala Districts.
