60 mm mortar rounds land in Thailand, damaging Thai homes, during fighting between the Myanmar military and KNLA in Myawaddy Township

Yangon, 23 October

According to reports by Thai media outlets, while fighting was taking place between the Myanmar military and the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) in Myawaddy Township, on the Myanmar side opposite Mae Sot Town, Tak Province, Thailand, 60 mm mortar rounds crossed the border and exploded within Village Tract No. 9 on the Thai side of the border.

It is reported that four 60 mm mortar rounds fired from the Myanmar side last night landed on the Thai side, prompting Thai authorities to reinforce security forces along the border.

According to initial reports, the impact of the 60 mm mortar rounds damaged the homes of Thai civilians, and a Myanmar woman sustained minor injuries to her arm.

The explosions of the mortar rounds damaged the homes of Thai civilians, including roof sheets, and blast effects and shrapnel damage were found on residential buildings.

Following the mortar impacts, homeowners and nearby residents reportedly evacuated the area quickly for safety.

The Thai military carried out inspections to monitor the situation along the Thai-Myanmar border and is reported to have increased security measures, exercised greater caution, and strictly enforced designated security procedures.

In addition, today, 23 October, Thailand's special task force and border patrol police deployed personnel along the banks of the Moei River on the Myanmar-Thailand border in Mae Sot District, Tak Province, and are conducting patrols and maintaining heightened security measures.

The Royal Thai Army is continuing to closely monitor the border situation and is reported to be strictly implementing security measures in response to the possibility of additional cross-border mortar rounds landing in Thailand.
