Residents said that nearly 20 civilians were killed or injured after the military carried out an airstrike on the area around Chaung Sone (Pi Chaung Sone) village in Paletwa Township, Paletwa District, Chin State.

A male resident of the Paletwa area said that at around 1:30 p.m. on 18 October, the military attacked the Chaung Sone area of Paletwa Township by dropping bombs from Y-12 aircraft and jet fighters, causing no fewer than 20 local residents, including people who were working there at the time, to be killed or injured.

“In the morning and around midday, you could say it was the busiest time, with cargo loading and unloading activities taking place. Because they came and dropped the bombs at that time, a great many people were hit. More than 20 bombs were dropped. People did not even have time to run. As far as is currently known, the bodies of 7 people have been found. More than 10 people have suffered minor, moderate, and severe injuries.”

Among the seven people killed in the airstrike were one child, two women, and four men. They were from Thantaung Ywar Thit village, Wet Chaung village, and Thantaung village in the Laymyo Chaung area of Paletwa Township.

The place that came under air attack was Pi Chaung Sone, at the headwaters of the Laymyo Chaung area of Mrauk-U District, Rakhine State, located at the border junction of Paletwa, Matupi, and Mindat townships in Chin State. A male resident of the Laymyo Chaung area of Mrauk-U Township said that because it is a key hub for transporting goods within Paletwa Township and toward Rakhine State, Chin ethnic residents as well as some Rakhine people come to live there in order to conduct business and earn a living.

“Both Rakhine and Chin people work in that place. That place is a busy area like the India Market in Kyauktaw. Now, because of the military council’s bombing, both property and human lives have been lost.”

The Arakan Army (AA) has stated that on 28 September, an airstrike on the India Market in Kyauktaw town killed 50 innocent civilians and injured nearly 60 others.
