A corn vendor and his wife were shot to death in Oaxaca. The State Attorney General’s Office identified the victims as Jesús Alvarado Carrera—known as “El Chuy”—and Rosalba Sánchez, noting that the incident stemmed from a debt involving members of a group engaged in predatory “drip-feed” (high-interest, short-term) lending. The attack took place in the Ejidal neighborhood, within the municipal agency of San Martín Mexicápam, while the couple was traveling on a motorcycle. Attorney General Bernardo Rodríguez Alamilla explained that the crime was an act of retaliation over a debt of 50,000 pesos. Two individuals on a motorcycle followed Jesús and Rosalba prior to the attack. Authorities have identified the suspects, though their names were not disclosed during the press conference. A representative from the Oaxaca Public Prosecutor’s Office presented the case at a public press conference. Local media reported that the prosecutor detailed how the couple operated within an informal financing structure. “El Chuy” and Rosalba provided loans to acquaintances and small-scale merchants. In turn, they were financed by a network of lenders and extortionists, the state prosecutor explained to the newspaper.
