17th October 2026
A military police officer in São Paulo, Brazil, was arrested after shooting and killing a woman who appeared to be experiencing a psychiatric crisis and was carrying a knife in the Pirituba neighborhood, located in the northern part of the city. The victim, 32-year-old Camila Pereira da Silva—a mother of two young girls—died at the scene after being struck in the chest. The incident, which was captured on security cameras last Thursday, follows two other recent cases in which officers from Brazil’s Military Police (PM) fired a total of 69 shots at individuals with mental health disorders within the span of just one week. The officer who fired the shot, soldier André Coelho Maximo da Costa—a member of the *Ronda Ostensiva com Apoio de Motocicletas* (ROCAM, or "Overt Patrol with Motorcycle Support" unit)—was arrested in the act and taken to the Department of Homicide and Person Protection (DHPP).
