Dhanu Region Chairman’s trusted man Win Maung shot dead; Pyu Saw Htee forces shoot at and detain youths returning from the Yay Taya town festival, leaving two dead and two missing

Yangon, October 12

Win Maung, a trusted man of Aka Lwin, chairman of the Dhanu Region, was shot dead on the spot when DPLA forces entered and carried out a clearance attack, and one weapon, one ammunition pouch, and ammunition were seized, according to an information and public-relations official of the Danu People’s Liberation Front/Danu People’s Liberation Army (DPLF/DPLA), who spoke to the Yangon New Era News Agency.

At around 8:30 pm on October 10, Pyu Saw Htee leader Win Maung of Pindaya Township was shot dead on the spot inside his home in Nyaungkok, after DPLA forces entered and carried out a clearance attack. One weapon, one ammunition pouch, some ammunition, and one registration document in his possession were seized, it is reported.

“He was Aka Lwin, the Dhanu Region chairman’s trusted man. The Pyu from Nyaungkok village alone were responsible for Aka Lwin’s security. The elder brother of Win Maung, who has now been cleared, is also a Pyu leader. He managed to escape. Win Maung’s body was taken to Pindaya Hospital and buried today,” the DPLF/DPLA information and public-relations official told the Yangon New Era News Agency.

After the clearance attack, while revolutionary force members were withdrawing at 9:30 pm, they clashed again with Pyu Saw Htee members from Thayetkon and Phanan villages near Thekon village in Pindaya Township. At least five Pyu Saw Htee members were killed and many were injured, while the revolutionary force members were able to withdraw without any casualties, it is reported.

After that clash, Pyu Saw Htee members shot at and detained Palaung youths returning from the Pindaya town festival, leaving two dead and two missing. It is reported that the military council side spread propaganda claiming that the revolutionary forces had shot dead the Palaung youths and detained them.

After Pyu leader Win Maung was shot dead, some Pyu Saw Htee members based in the Dhanu region have been discussing handing back their weapons, while others have fled and gone into hiding. Because Dhanu Region Chairman Aka Lwin is attending a Rakhine State (Rakhine Affairs) meeting and has not yet given an answer, it is not yet known whether the weapon handover plan will succeed, it is said.

“After their leader was killed, the Pyu in Pindaya have been discussing handing back their weapons. Most of the Pyu are hiding. Aka Lwin is attending the Rakhine State meeting and has not yet given a response, so we do not yet know whether they will hand them over or not. As of today, forces have been deployed all around the area where the incident occurred. We want to warn the Pyu in the Dhanu region that there is no guarantee for anyone who is obstructing the revolution,” the DPLF/DPLA information and public-relations official said.

The killed Pyu leader Win Maung was a longtime supporter and hardline member of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP). After the military seized power, he served as administrator of the Nyaungkok village tract in Yay Taya Township. Although administrators have now been reselected, he continued serving as administrator without being allowed to stand in the election, it is reported.
