Taiwan's coast guard sent a patrol boat to chase away two Chinese fishing boats that entered territorial waters near the Taiwan-controlled island of Dongsha.

At around 11 a.m. on Thursday, the Dongsha-Nansha Division began detecting an unidentified vessel about 15.5 nautical miles northeast of Dongsha Island, the Taiwan Coast Guard (CGA) said in a statement on Friday.

The CGA said the area was about 5.5 nautical miles inside Taiwan's designated territorial waters, prompting the immediate dispatch of the 4,000-ton Yunlin patrol ship to inspect the situation.

At around 3 p.m., the Yunlin patrol boat spotted two Chinese fishing boats, Yue Hui Dong Yu 75066 and Jin Sha, fishing about 27 nautical miles east of Dongsha Island, about eight nautical miles inside Taiwan's territorial waters.

According to the CGA, "extended waters" refer to Taiwan's territorial waters, which are defined as 12 nautical miles around the mainland of Taiwan, with separate distances for outlying islands.

The "limited waters" are the contiguous zone designated for law enforcement activities outside a country's territorial waters, extending up to 24 nautical miles around the mainland of Taiwan.

Near Dongsha Island, the territorial waters can be calculated based on the small rocks close to the island, so it could be wider than the standard 12 nautical miles and 24 nautical miles.

The CGA said that the two Chinese fishing boats were repeatedly warned by the Taiwanese patrol ship Yunlin to leave the territorial waters, but the Chinese vessel Yue Hui Dong Yu weighed anchor and departed, but the Jin Sha refused to leave.

The Jin Sha was warned three times over the radio, but when it did not move, the Yunlin patrol boat tried to drive it away by firing a water cannon from about 200 meters away for 30 seconds, in accordance with the law.

However, the efforts were ineffective, and the Yunlin patrol boat gradually approached the Jin Sha, and as it got closer, it fired water cannons at the Chinese fishing boat for 90 seconds, the CGA said.

The CGA said the use of minimally invasive methods, such as water cannons, was in accordance with Coast Guard procedures.

Then, at the request of the crew on the Jin Sha, the Yunlin patrol ship delivered 35 hot meals, towed the Chinese fishing boat out of the restricted waters, and handed it over to a Chinese ship early Friday morning.

The CGA said it will continue to implement the policy of expelling Chinese fishing boats that enter Taiwan's territorial waters in accordance with the law, and will continue to carry out national maritime border security and humanitarian assistance operations.
