At around 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM, jet fighters bombed and fired rockets, damaging and burning the gold rafts. Witnesses said the damage was more extensive after the first attack and a second attack while rescue efforts were underway.
Local resistance groups said that the military twice bombed gold-flagged miners at the Thaphanseik Dam in the west of Kyunhla Township in Kanbalu District, Sagaing Region, killing six people and injuring more than 30.
The military bombed gold mining rafts at Thaphan Seik Dam, about 10 miles west of Kyunhla, once with a fighter jet yesterday (October 5) at around 1 p.m., and then again with two fighter jets at around 4:30 p.m.
A comrade from a People's Revolutionary Army battalion in Kandal Province said that the second bombing by two fighter jets occurred while rescue and firefighting operations were underway after the first bombing. This caused many casualties.
“The first plane dropped bombs and then fired rockets. The rafts were destroyed by fire and many people died. Before they could save them, two more planes came in the evening and many people were injured. The fire was also quite intense, and the smoke was still rising,” said the revolutionary comrade.
At around 4:30 p.m., a jet fighter from Homalin dropped six bombs three times, and the next fighter jet dropped three bombs and fired rockets in succession, the comrade said.
Five locals were killed immediately in the first bombing, while one of the seriously injured died, bringing the death toll to six. A second attack during the rescue operation reportedly increased the number of injured to more than 30.
The above-mentioned revolutionary comrade said that out of the more than 30 injured, some are in critical condition due to serious injuries, and the death toll could rise further.
“… If the owner of two rafts fell directly on his raft, both rafts caught fire and all eight workers were injured, two of whom died,” the comrade said.
A woman from Kyunhla said that seven gold-floating rafts were destroyed by the bombing, while four other rafts were not damaged by the fire. Most gold-floating rafters are worried that more bombs will be dropped.
“The locals are very scared because the planes are coming in three or four planes in the morning and evening. The previous time they were attacked, there were a lot of deaths, so everyone is scared. Some are already packing up their belongings,” the woman said.
On March 15, the military bombed and fired rockets at a gold-mining village, killing 13 local gold miners.
The western banks of the Thaphan Saik Dam are controlled by the revolutionary forces, who receive taxes from most of the gold floats and gold mines.
Local resistance groups believe that the military's aim in targeting businesses rather than fighting may be to cut off funding for the resistance forces.
“Gold mining and oil fields are funding the revolution, and the people working in these industries are also organizations supporting the revolution, so Kanbalu Pyu leader (in the robe) Wasawa has repeatedly requested through his Telegram channel to shoot down planes,” the aforementioned revolutionary comrade said.
Kyun Hla Township, Kandal Province, is an area with many military-backed militias, and the military and the Pyaw Hla militia control the eastern bank of the Thaphan Seik Dam, west of Kyun Hla.
