Members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) released a video on social media boasting of their presence in the municipality of Jerez, Zacatecas, where they issued a direct challenge to the gunmen of Ismael Zambada Sicairos—known as "Mayito Flaco," leader of the criminal organization La Mayiza—to come out and face them in that territory. In the recording, masked men clad in tactical gear and armed with high-powered weapons claim to have taken up positions in the Zacatecan municipality; they explicitly challenge "Mayito Flaco’s" faction—whose main operations are based in Sinaloa and Durango—to a direct confrontation in the area. The CJNG’s incursion into Jerez and its open threat against La Mayiza are part of an escalating conflict between the two criminal organizations over control of Zacatecas, a geostrategically vital point in the drug trafficking logistics network for moving synthetic drugs and firearms toward the northern border. In previous statements, the CJNG has accused the Zacatecas Immediate Reaction Force (FRIZ)—an elite unit of the State Preventive Police—of collaborating with the La Mayiza faction.
