A 250-kilogram German bomb from the Second World War has been discovered at a construction site in Vecsés, just outside Budapest, alongside a smaller 50-kilogram bomb.

The explosives were found recently on the outskirts of Vecsés, in Pest County, after police received a report about suspected unexploded ordnance at a construction site. A bomb disposal patrol from the Hungarian Defence Forces identified the devices as a German-made 50-kilogram bomb and a 250-kilogram German demolition bomb.

According to the MH 1st Explosive Ordnance Disposal and River Flotilla Regiment, the condition of the bombs allowed them to be moved safely. Specialists transported both devices to the Hungarian Defence Forces’ central collection facility, where they will later be destroyed.

Historic military significance
The discovery is not considered unusual in the area, according to the bomb disposal unit. During the Second World War, the area around Vecsés formed part of the immediate logistical and approach zone of Ferihegy Airport, which was used by the German Luftwaffe.

The region also saw heavy military activity towards the end of 1944, when German and Hungarian forces conducted prolonged defensive operations in front of the Attila Line, a defensive system established around Budapest.

With unexploded wartime ordnance still occasionally emerging during construction and excavation work, bomb disposal experts continue to play an important role in ensuring such discoveries are handled safely. The latest find appeared more than eight decades after the Second World War, but many are found every year.
