An armed man was shot by police outside the Royal Palace in Stockholm on Tuesday evening.

He was seriously injured and taken to hospital by ambulance, police said on their website.

The man is now under arrest and charged with aggravated threat against an official and a serious violation of the Knife Act.

The police were called to the Royal Palace at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday due to "an aggressive man with a weapon."

According to information provided to SVT, the man was armed with a knife.

During the operation, the police fired live fire at him. Police confirm that the man was hit and taken to hospital by ambulance. The injuries are considered serious but not life-threatening.

The man was reportedly hit in the leg, according to information provided to SVT.

Witness: “A lot of blue lights”

A witness tells SVT that several police patrols were on site.

– We were standing outside the Grand Hotel and suddenly saw a lot of blue lights, both ambulances and police, says the witness.

The witness says that three gunshot-like sounds were heard in the distance from the scene.

The police are investigating the incident as a serious threat against an official and a serious violation of the Knife Act. They state that there was no danger to the public.

Otherwise, they are keeping quiet about the operation and, among other things, do not want to go into what type of weapon the man was carrying.

– I will not be able to explain the course of events in the media. It is an ongoing operation and we will carry out a number of investigative measures, says police spokesperson Susanna Rinaldo.

The court: Behaved threateningly

The court has commented on the incident in a message to TT. It states that the man acted threateningly and confirms the information that he had a knife.

The court adds that no member of the royal family was at the palace at the time of the incident.

On Wednesday morning, police spokesman Anders Bryngelsson said he had no new information about the incident.

– It has not been possible to interview the person yet and therefore the person has not been notified of suspicion. I cannot make any assessment of the damage situation but can only state that it has not been possible to interview him yet, says Bryngelsson.

The police later stated that the man had been arrested and charged with aggravated threat against an official and aggravated violation of the Knife Act. "A longer interrogation will be held with the man at a later date," they write on their website.
