Police shot dead one of the alleged accused in the killing of Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Harjit Singh, identified as Deepak Singh and recovered a .30-bore pistol, two magazines containing eight live cartridges, a mobile phone and the Activa scooter allegedly used in the crime, during an exchange of fire in the Islamabad area in Amritsar District on September 19 night, reports The Tribune and India Today. Another suspect reportedly escaped under the cover of darkness. ASI Harjit Singh was shot dead while on duty near the Bhagtanwala grain market in Amritsar on September 18 early morning. Police said CCTV footage, technical inputs, tower-dump analysis and local intelligence helped identify the suspects. According to police, the suspects opened fire at a police team during an attempted interception and Deepak was injured in the retaliatory firing. He later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
