NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) — A homemade explosive device found near a North Myrtle Beach beach access Monday could have caused significant injury to someone nearby, police said.

North Myrtle Beach Police Department Public Information Officer Desirae Gostlin said the device, which was small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, was found near the showers at the 12th Avenue North beach access Monday afternoon.

Police received a call from a member of the public at approximately 3 p.m. reporting the suspicious object near the edge of a landscaped area. An officer responded, and the Horry County Police Department Bomb Squad was called to the scene.

After examining the object, the bomb squad determined it was a homemade explosive device and took possession of it for disposal in accordance with its protocols, Gostlin said.

Investigators believe the device would have required an ignition source to function.

Police believe the device was placed near the beach access Sunday afternoon, but investigators have not determined who placed it there.

The North Myrtle Beach Police Department is asking to hear from anyone who was near the beach access at 12th Avenue North and Ocean Boulevard between 3 and 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27.

Investigators specifically want to hear from anyone who observed a suspicious device or suspicious activity near the showers and restrooms during that time.

Police are also asking anyone with photographs, video or other information from the area to contact the department’s Investigations Division at 843-447-9376.

North Myrtle Beach police have conducted multiple sweeps of the beach, and no other devices have been located.

Police are warning people who encounter a suspicious object not to attempt to touch or handle it.

The circumstances surrounding the device remain under investigation.
