On 20 September 2026, in La Merced de Buenos Aires (San Miguel de Urcuqui, Imbabura), the army attacked infrastructure used for illegal mining using artillery missiles. During a military operation, BM-21 artillery vehicles and mortars were used to destroy illegal mining sites. There were no casualties reported.
