A young man was shot dead on Sunday in the village of Tshinkonko, in the coastal city of Muanda, near a Perenco-REP oil company post.
According to local sources, the victim was suspected of theft by a FARDC soldier assigned to guard the Perenco-REP facilities. The soldier allegedly opened fire on the young man, who died at the scene.
Following the tragedy, residents of Tshinkonko barricaded the main road, blocking access for Perenco's teams. Several of the oil company's heavy vehicles were also immobilized by the angry crowd. Residents demanded the withdrawal of the military personnel assigned to secure the oil site, believing that they are not suited to managing civilians.
