Mine event in Chile on Sun 13th September 2026
13th September 2026
On 13 September 2026, near Complejo Fronterizo Chacalluta (Arica y Parinacota), two antitank mines around 280 meters from the Peruvian border near marker 16 detonated after a van passed near them. The explosion killed the van's driver and totally destroyed the vehicle. The driver was travelling between Tacna (in Peru) and Arica but while some sources reported they were driving southbound, others stated that they were going northbound (conflicting versions). The driver was suspected of smuggling copper cathodes, masks and parts for masks, and had driven through barbed wire to go via the minefield. 1 fatality.
