Three suspected explosive items found on a beach where several shells are other ordnance have been discovered over the past year, are due to be destroyed.

Coastguard rescue teams and a bomb squad unit were called to Drigg beach, about seven miles south of the Sellafield nuclear facility on Cumbria's Irish Sea coast, on Tuesday morning.

After the items were assessed it was decided an explosive ordnance disposal unit team would aim to carry out a controlled explosion on Thursday, Millom Coastguard Rescue Team said.

Five suspected explosive items were destroyed on the same beach earlier this month, while a number of artillery shells and mortars were found in the area last year.
