A teacher and three students were injured on the morning of September 8 after a heavy weapon shell landed at Basic Education High School (No. 4) in Sittwe.

The incident occurred amid intensifying clashes that have erupted across five locations between Myanmar regime forces and the Arakan Army (AA) since September 4.

A source familiar with the situation confirmed that the injuries include a teacher, identified as Kyaw Win, and three students who chose to remain anonymous.

Local sources noted that while the heavy artillery shell struck the school grounds, it failed to detonate, preventing far more severe casualties and structural devastation.

However, the impact shattered the school’s glass windows, and the resulting flying debris caused the injuries. Although initial reports suggested the shell had exploded, subsequent updates clarified that no detonation took place.

It remains unclear which side fired the projectile. Fierce fighting continues between the Myanmar military and the AA across approximately five strategic fronts on the outskirts of Sittwe. Key battlegrounds include the Min Chaung Bridge near Shwe Min Gan, A-Myint Kyun, and the Wa Bo area.

The school has been closed since it was hit by shelling, disrupting the education of thousands of students.
