Communal clash in Abuja leaves one farmer dead, another critically injured

By: Zagazola Makama

A communal clash in Kowa Yarda Village, Karshi, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), has left one farmer dead and another critically injured following an alleged attack by a herder.

The incident occurred at about 6:40 p.m. on Sept. 13, 2026, when troops of 177 Guards Battalion and personnel of the Nigeria Police at the Karshi patrol base responded to a distress call over a communal clash between residents of the area.

Security sources said preliminary findings indicated that a herder allegedly used a machete to attack two farmers who attempted to prevent his cattle from entering their farmland.

One of the farmers was killed in the attack, while the second sustained critical injuries and was evacuated to Karshi General Hospital for medical attention.

The incident reportedly triggered retaliatory attacks against Fulani residents in the community, during which several houses were destroyed. No additional loss of life was recorded.

Troops subsequently engaged the family of the deceased, youth leaders and local vigilantes, urging them to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

In a separate intervention, the troops rescued a Fulani vigilante from Ara Sabo who had reportedly been detained by youths in the area.

The vigilante was subsequently handed over to the Vigilante Headquarters in Ara Sabo for further action.

Security personnel have continued to monitor the area to prevent further escalation and restore calm.
