UAV event in Iraq on Wed 9th September 2026
9th September 2026
On 9 September 2026, night, around 5:30 Baghdad time, suspected IRGC forces launched a drone strike that directly impacted the New Andros crude oil tanker (IMO: 9294252) in the Persian Gulf, around 28 nm southeast of the Coast of Al Faw in Iraqi territorial waters (Al Faw, Al Basrah). There were no fatalities or injuries. The projectile struck the forward ballast tank causing a fire. The ship was carrying about 2 million barrels of Iraqi fuel oil at the time of the attack. The IRGC claimed to have targeted 8 oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation to overnight US attacks on 5 Iran-affiliated tankers as well as 10 additional 'violating ships' that attempted to pass through a 'prohibited and unsafe zone' that day.
