On 8 September 2026, a drone operated by the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces attacked two vehicles carrying suspected gold miners from the Tindouf camps in Garezrez, around 30 km from the Moroccan defensive wall and 40 km from the Mauritanian border. Location coded to Mahbes (Assa-Zag, Guelmim-Oued Noun), the largest populated area in the buffer zone near the border with Algeria. The strike seriously damaged both vehicles and injured two people but caused no fatalities. The vehicles had entered the buffer zone, where Moroccan forces seek to prevent unauthorized movements and Polisario Front activity.
