Mine event in Kyiv, Brovary District, Hoholiv area, Ukraine on Fri 14th August 2026

This is a very disturbing development.

I saw this photograph a couple of weeks ago and it really made me think. I ran it through an AI-image detector and it comes up as real, which makes it even more disturbing.

On 14 August, a number of bright pink PFM-1 scatterable mines and their cassette were found in a cornfield near Hoholiv, in the Brovary district of Kyiv region, Ukraine. They appear to be have been dropped by a UAV.

PFM-1 mines are not produced in bright pink, or any other shade of pink, for that matter. PFM-1 mines are produced in colours that make them blend into the ground they are dropped onto. So, we can be confident that these mines have been 3D-printed, with the colour being deliberately chosen. They have no military utility.

These mines were produced to make them visible. The only reason I can think of for doing this is to make them attractive.  Think about that for a second; these are not mines that are designed to be hidden killers, they are designed to be visible and to attract attention. Therefore, they are targeting people who will be attracted to them.

My assumption, and I stress that this cannot be proved, is that these mines were designed to be scattered over an urban area in the hope that they would injure local civilians. 

Any other - less dark - ideas about why these mines were made in bright pink plastic would be welcomed.
