IED event in Telangana, Bedemgutta, Mulugu District area, India on Wed 2nd September 2026

On September 2, a 60-year-old tribal man, Madakam Nageswara Rao, was killed after allegedly stepping on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at Bedemgutta on the Karreguttalu hillocks in Mulugu District, Telangana, reports Hindustan Times. Nageswara Rao, a resident of Nugur village in Venkatapuram Mandal (administrative sub division), had entered the forest with five other tribal villagers to collect bamboo. While returning, he reportedly stepped on the IED, sustaining injuries. His companions covered his wounds and carried him on a makeshift stretcher, but he died before reaching the village. The incident occurred about 10 kilometres from Nugur. Police subsequently reached the village and launched an investigation, while Security Forces (SFs) were checking the route taken by the group for possible additional explosives. The IED was allegedly planted by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), which had previously operated in the area. In July and August 2025, three persons, including a tribal man, lost limbs in landmine blasts on the hillocks, while a Policeman was injured during a demining operation in February 2026. The hillocks have since been opened to the public for tourism.
