Mine event in Kisoroszi, SzigetcsĂșcs area, Hungary on Sun 9th August 2026
9th August 2026
Unusually low water levels on the Danube have once again revealed wartime relics, this time exposing a 460-kilogram British naval mine dating back to the Second World War near Kisoroszi, a village about 40 kilometers north of Budapest. The explosive device was discovered by bathers and safely removed by Hungarian bomb disposal experts.
The find was reported at Szigetcsúcs in Kisoroszi. Following the report, Ensign Tibor Kocsis, commander of the bomb disposal patrol, arrived at the scene and determined that the unusually low water level had exposed a 460-kilogram British naval mine dating from the Second World War.
The mine did not require on-site defusing; thus, it was transported to the Hungarian Defense Forces’ central collection point and will be destroyed at a later date.
Previously, the Hungarian Defense Forces’ explosive ordnance disposal unit identified and secured ten TMi-35 anti-tank mines, a hand grenade, and one kilogram of assorted infantry ammunition in Budapest. Just a few hundred meters away, near the Buda end of the Elisabeth Bridge, passersby discovered a significantly older artifact: a medieval cannonball.
On another occasion, a German DKW NZ 350-1 motorcycle was recovered by experts from the Museum and Institution of Military History. Beneath the motorcycle, museum experts also uncovered the remains of German soldiers.
Beyond the military finds, the low water level is currently offering residents and tourists an extraordinary spectacle. The water is so shallow that from the present-day Liberty Bridge (Szabadság híd) the riverbed is visible to the naked eye.
