Two people were found dead following a firearm incident on Friday afternoon in Nelson, a city on the South Island of New Zealand, police said.

Police received information shortly before noon about the alleged theft of a shotgun from a store in Annesbrook in suburban Nelson. The offender left the area in a vehicle before police arrived.

Initial enquiries suggested the two deceased knew each other, Acting Tasman District Commander Superintendent Blair Macdonald said in a statement.

Police said the incident was isolated and there was no ongoing risk to public safety.
