According to people familiar with the incident, a civilian died after stepping on a landmine planted by the military in Lay Myint Township, Hinthada District, Ayeyarwady Region.

The deceased was a man in his 40s living in Kakkugyi Village, Lay Myint Township. He died on the evening of September 3 after stepping on a landmine in a field outside Kakkugyi Village while going out to cut firewood.

A refugee aid worker said, "He died suddenly with wounds all over his body. It is understood that the person who died from the landmine was a refugee. He died while chopping wood."

The site where the mine exploded was reportedly an area where military forces had been stationed and encamped in the second week of August, and where civilians were passing through to cut firewood and farm.

A resident of Lay Myint Township said, “The military often makes military incursions in those areas. We have to avoid them. We can’t do any work. There is no fighting. It’s best not to go where the military is moving.”

The deceased refugee was said to have arrived from Gwe Township, Rakhine State, to escape the war with his family in Lay Myint Township.

Locals are worried about landmine explosions occurring on civilian-owned farmland, and are finding it difficult to carry out their farming and traditional wood-cutting and charcoal-burning activities.
