Hokkaido University said Aug. 27 that a graduate student died after being splashed with highly toxic hydrofluoric acid in an accident at its School of Science.The university issued a statement saying, "We take extremely seriously the loss of a precious student's life in this tragic accident at a university where educational and research activities should be conducted in a safe environment."According to the university, the accident occurred on the morning of Aug. 27 in a building of its School of Science in Sapporo's Kita Ward, with one graduate student being splashed with highly toxic hydrofluoric acid. Another graduate student and an undergraduate student who came to the victim's aid sustained minor injuries. All three were taken to a hospital.The graduate student who was splashed with hydrofluoric acid was later confirmed dead at the hospital. The other two had no health problems and reportedly returned home.The statement added, "We sincerely pray for the repose of the deceased student's soul and extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family."The university is investigating the cause of the accident and other matters in cooperation with related organizations. "If new facts become clear in the investigation, we will make another announcement," the statement said.
