Projectile event in Spain on Wed 26th August 2026
26th August 2026
A chance discovery in the Garraf massif required the intervention of the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police) in Castelldefels on Wednesday. A citizen found an object in the mountains and, fearing it might pose a danger, avoided handling it and alerted the police. The decision proved correct: officers later confirmed they had found a relic from the Spanish Civil War that could still pose a risk almost nine decades after the end of the conflict.
The find turned out to be a 65-millimeter artillery shell from the Spanish Civil War that still contained explosive charges . The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists from the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police) took charge of the piece and destroyed it in a controlled and safe manner. Despite having been in the mountains for decades, the device could still explode and posed a risk if handled. In the event of such a discovery, the Catalan police remind the public that the object should never be touched or moved : one should move away from the area and immediately call 112.
