Troops Arrest Two Suspected Terrorists, Recover AK-47, Ammunition in Zamfara

By Zagazola Makama

Troops of 1 Brigade Nigerian Army, operating from Forward Operating Base (FOB) Kaura Namoda, have arrested two suspected terrorists and recovered arms, ammunition and communication equipment during a night fighting patrol in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The operation, conducted in the early hours of Tuesday, August 25, 2026, is part of sustained intelligence-led efforts by the Brigade to deny terrorists and other criminal elements freedom of action within its Area of Responsibility (AoR).

Sources told Zagazola Makama that at about 1:50 a.m., troops of 1 Brigade Combat Team 2, operating from FOB Kaura Namoda, encountered and apprehended two suspects during the patrol.

The suspects were identified as Jabiru Hassan, 25, and Umaru Bello, 23, both reportedly from Ilela Village in Maradun Local Government Area of the state.

Troops recovered one AK-47 rifle, one locally fabricated Dane gun, two rifle magazines and 55 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition from the suspects.

Also recovered were 18 cartridges for the Dane gun, one motorcycle, two Baofeng radio sets and one mobile phone. Other items found in their possession included two MP3 players, one camouflage vest, two jungle hats, one handbag and N44,500 in cash.

Preliminary examination of the suspects’ mobile phone reportedly revealed photographs and video materials considered potentially incriminating and of intelligence value. The materials are currently undergoing further verification and exploitation by the appropriate authorities to determine their relevance and establish any possible links to terrorist activities within the area.

The successful operation highlights the impact of sustained fighting patrols, intelligence-led operations and the deployment of troops across vulnerable locations within the Brigade’s Area of Responsibility.

The recovery of weapons, ammunition, communication equipment and other military-related items is expected to further disrupt the operational activities and freedom of movement of criminal elements operating along the axis. The Acting Commander, 1 Brigade Nigerian Army, Col. J. Umaru, commended the troops for their vigilance, courage and professionalism during the operation.

He charged personnel to sustain the tempo of offensive operations and remain resolute in denying terrorists and other criminal elements the opportunity to establish footholds within the Brigade’s Area of Responsibility. Col. Umaru reaffirmed the Brigade’s commitment to protecting lives and property while supporting efforts to restore lasting peace and security across Zamfara State. He said the latest operational success demonstrated the Brigade’s determination to maintain operational superiority and decisively confront threats to peace and security within its Area of Responsibility. The suspects remain in military custody for further investigation and intelligence exploitation.
