Grenade event in Lviv area, Ukraine on Fri 28th August 2026

Today, August 28, in Lviv, a man found an object that looked like a grenade at 93 Kulparkivska Street. Later, the police clarified that, according to preliminary data, it was a hand smoke grenade. It was sent for examination.

As Alina Podreiko, a spokeswoman for the Lviv region police, told Suspilny, the police received the report at around 11:10 a.m. The area was fenced off.

The police were called by a local resident, Roman, who works in the area. The man told Suspilny that at first he thought it was an ordinary tin can.

"I was walking, I caught a twig and it rolled out at my feet. At about 11:04 I called the police (...) At first I thought it was a can of half a can of paint or something, but... the threads, the wrapping, everything - it doesn't look like a can (...) I'll tell you, the hair on my arms was standing up for a long time," the man said.

Explosives experts, dog handlers, criminal investigation officers, an investigative and operational group, as well as patrol officers worked at the scene. Explosives experts seized the find.

The police later reported that the discovered object looked like a hand-held smoke grenade, which is used to create a smoke screen. However, this will be determined precisely by the results of an expert examination.

The events will soon be given a legal qualification. Law enforcement officers are establishing the origin of the checker and the person who left it in a public place.
