The incident took place at the junction of Rue Gustave Defne and Chaussée de Forest in the municipality of Saint-Gilles. According to Mayor Jean Spinetta, the shooting is likely to be linked to drug trafficking.

The area near the so-called Place de Banque is known for drug dealing. Residents of Saint-Gilles and the local authorities have repeatedly highlighted problems associated with the illegal drug trade. Law enforcement officers are currently establishing the circumstances of the shooting and investigating the causes of the conflict.
