UAV event in Moldova, Republic of on Thu 20th August 2026

On 20 August 2026, at 09:25, a mobile patrol of the Giurgiulesti border police sector found a crater containing the remnants of an unmanned aerial vehicle about one kilometer from the border on Moldovan territory near Giurgiulesti (Cahul), with experts giving a preliminary finding that the debris belonged to a Geran type drone. Earlier the same day at about 03:45, during a Russian attack on Ukraine, a border police patrol observed an explosion at a truck parking area on Ukrainian territory about 150 meters from the Giurgiulesti-Reni crossing point, after which a forest fire spread over about 70 to 100 square meters onto Moldovan territory and was contained at 04:30 (coded separately in Ukraine). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that one of the drones aimed at Ukraine crossed Moldovan airspace, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs noted that border police staff and others present at the crossing point were exposed to risk from the military action near the border.
