A local resident of Khran Pyin Village in northern Maungdaw Township was injured today after a group of armed militants entered Myanmar waters from Bangladesh and opened fire.
The victim has been identified as 40-year-old U Maung Maung Gyi of Khran Pyin Village.
According to a report by Golden Era Media (GEM), the incident occurred while U Maung Maung Kyi, U Bo Win Tun, and Daw Abu were fishing in the Naf River, which forms the border between Myanmar’s Arakan State and Bangladesh.
At approximately 12:10 p.m., five militants arriving in a boat from the Bangladeshi side fired six shots, wounding U Maung Maung Kyi on his left cheek and nose.
The Arakan Army (AA) is currently pursuing the armed group.
In the wake of the attack, the AA has issued a public warning advising residents to exercise extreme caution.
The military group noted an increased risk of further attacks on August 25, a day of remembrance observed by the Muslim community in northern Arakan State.
