Undefined Explosive Device (UED) event in Djugu, Bule area, Congo, the Democratic Republic of the on Tue 18th August 2026

The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), through the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), carried out the destruction of several explosive devices in the town of Bule, located about 80 km from Bunia, in the territory of Djugu, in Ituri.

This operation, carried out on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, aimed to eliminate a direct threat to civilian populations and to strengthen community awareness of the dangers associated with mines and other explosive remnants of war. The neutralized devices had been discovered the previous week at the Bule shopping center by residents who are gradually returning to their homes after spending nearly nine months at the Plaine de Savo displacement site.

As soon as these dangerous objects were reported, MONUSCO peacekeepers secured the area to prevent any incidents, pending the arrival of demining specialists. On August 17, the UNMAS team from Bunia went to the site to carry out their safe destruction. This intervention has averted a major risk for the inhabitants of this urban area, which has been severely affected by armed conflict. The actions of MONUSCO were welcomed by the inhabitants of Bule, who were aware of the danger posed by these explosives left behind by the fighting.
