A taxi driver was shot dead during the night of Saturday to Sunday, 23 August 2026, by armed men in Butembo, in North Kivu province. ‎ ‎

According to Blaise Musovoli, president of the Congo Taxi Drivers’ Network (RETAC), the victim, identified as Kakule Kahamwiti, was shot by the attackers, who also stole his motorbike. ‎

‎“We are deeply concerned about the shooting death of our taxi driver, Kakule Kahamwiti. He is a member of the AMAJA association. He was shot whilst carrying out his work as a taxi driver. These armed bandits took his motorbike after committing their crime,” he explained. ‎ ‎

The Congo Taxi Drivers’ Network (RETAC) condemns this latest murder of one of its members and calls for a thorough investigation to track down those responsible for this act. ‎ ‎

The victim’s body was recovered from the scene of the crime and taken to the mortuary at Matanda Hospital, RETAC stated.
