NIGER 🇳🇪 | Series of Deadly Attacks: A Multitude of Armed Actors Involved

🔸On Monday, 08/24, JNIM claimed control of a Nigerien army military post in the village of Bangoume (Tillabéri region). No casualty figures have been reported.

🔸The day before, on 08/23, in Boulakana (Diffa region), elements of the terrorist group Boko Haram opened fire on civilians, killing 5 and abducting 8 others. Later in the day, to the west of the village, other civilians were abducted after their vehicle was set on fire.

🔸The same day, in Kabobi (Maradi region), an attack by an armed group reportedly killed 6 members of the population and wounded several others. The attack has not been claimed; it could involve cross-border armed bandits or the EIS, via Lakurawa, which operates nearby.

🔸The previous day, on 08/22, the village of N’Guel Kolo was attacked, this time by ISWAP. 4 civilians were reportedly killed.

🔸Finally, on 08/21, a gendarmerie post in the town of Tessa (Dosso region) came under a violent assault.

The EIS, which claimed the attack, asserts it killed 20 gendarmes, compared to 18 according to the previously established toll. (photos in map thumbnails 📸) The position was reportedly completely looted and then set on fire. ℹ️ These attacks, carried out in several regions, along with that of the rebel group MPLJ earlier in the week (quoted below), fully illustrate the scale and diversity of the actors involved in the country's deteriorating security situation.
