MACEDONIA, Ohio (WOIO) - City officials say a chemical incident at Royal Chemical in Macedonia has been safely resolved after a white vapor cloud forced a brief shelter‑in‑place advisory Thursday morning. According to a news release from the City of Macedonia, crews were called to Royal Chemical on Freeway Drive around 7:21 a.m. for a reported chemical reaction producing white smoke. The Summit County HAZMAT team was immediately requested and arrived at 7:42 a.m. to assess the incident. Firefighters say there was no fire, no explosion and no immediate threat to the surrounding community, and the shelter‑in‑place advisory was lifted after air monitoring showed the air was safe. From the city of Macedonia’s press release, the incident was caused by an accidental chemical mixture that triggered the reaction. For extra safety Macedonia City Service Department built a temporary dam in a nearby drainage ditch to prevent any runoff from the incident, according to the release. The city says there were no injuries to firefighters or any other EMS responders. One employee was evaluated by EMS at Royal Chemical but did not need to be taken to the hospital. Emergency operations wrapped up shortly after 11 a.m. Officials have not released the specific chemicals involved but say the situation at the plant is under control.
