Nine people were evaluated by EMS crews Friday evening after a chlorine spill in a Chambersburg residence. According to Chambersburg Fire Department, the spill was reported at 6:41 p.m. in the 900 block of South 4th Street. Crews said nine people experienced "varying degrees of illness," but no one had to be hospitalized for their symptoms. The incident occurred after chlorine shock was spilled inside of the home. Liquid chlorine shock is often used in swimming pools, but it can create a toxic gas if it mixes with air, according to the the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Members of the Cumberland County Hazmat Team helped ventilate the building and monitor air quality levels. The incident was cleared about an hour later, according to the fire department.
