A Russian strike on a critical infrastructure facility in Ukraine's Poltava region on August 2 caused a leak of a hazardous chemical substance, Ukraine's State Emergency Service (SES) reported. According to the SES, the leak originated from damaged storage tanks at the affected facility. Specialists from a radiation, chemical, and biological protection unit were deployed to the site to contain the incident. Emergency responders carried out sealing operations on the damaged tanks and the points where the chemical had escaped. The SES said the prompt response prevented the hazardous substance from spreading beyond the affected area. The leak follows repeated warnings from Ukrainian officials about Russia's use of hazardous chemical substances on the battlefield. According to Ukraine's Ministry of Defense, Russian forces have deployed munitions containing chemical agents more than 13,300 times against Ukrainian troops since the start of the full-scale invasion. The data was presented during a meeting of the Information Exchange Group on Technical Assistance to Ukraine. During the event, Colonel Valerii Veber, deputy head of the Main Directorate for Mine Action, Civil Protection, and Environmental Safety, told international partners that what initially appeared to be isolated cases of chemical agent use had developed into a systematic tactic employed by Russian forces on the battlefield. The ministry said such incidents were relatively isolated in 2023, but the frequency of chemical-related attacks increased sharply beginning in 2024. According to the ministry, the use of chemical munitions has remained consistently high along the entire front line throughout the first half of 2026. Ukraine has also accused Russian occupation authorities in parts of the temporarily occupied Kherson region of violating safety protocols for disposing of livestock infected with anthrax, warning that improper handling of contaminated carcasses could expose civilians to the disease and contaminate surrounding agricultural land.
