Undefined Explosive Device (UED) event in Malmö, Lugnet, Kaptensgatan area, Sweden on Wed 5th August 2026

An explosion occurred on Kaptensgatan in Lugnet in Malmö on Wednesday afternoon. The National Bomb Squad was called to the scene to investigate the object. The cordons have now been lifted.

The police cordoned off the scene and forensic experts and the national bomb disposal unit were called in.

Residents were urged by police to stay inside and away from windows until police checked the object.

– It could be that the entire object has not exploded, they want an expert on site to be able to write it off. A safety measure, says Jakob Palmgren, police spokesman.

At 6 p.m., the police announced that the danger to the public was over and the blockades and evacuations were lifted.

Police: "Something has happened"

People were reportedly seen running from the scene after the incident, according to witnesses.

– Something has exploded, but there is no information about any injuries, says Jakob Palmgren.

A witness tells SVT that it echoed throughout the neighborhood and that the police went around asking if anyone had seen a man throw something through the gate.

There is damage to the gate of an apartment building and windows have been broken. The police are investigating the incident as a serious act of vandalism.

– A search for a suspect is underway in parallel. We are checking cameras and interviewing any witnesses who have been at the scene, says Jakob Palmgren.
