Authorities Destroy Massive WWII Bomb Found in Danube River Amid Drought

Slovakian police destroyed a 1,543-pound (700-kilogram) bomb dating from World War II after the weapon was found in the drought-hit Danube River on Monday, August 3.

Footage released by Slovak Police in the Nitra Region shows authorities responding to the scene and relocating the bomb to a safe area, "where experts placed it in a pit about five meters deep and deformed it with controlled explosion under strict safety measures."

According to police, the weapon was identified as a British air naval mine.

Today's Slovakian territory was most likely used as part of Operation Gardening, "during which the British Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1944 mined the Danube River in order to disrupt the supply of enemy troops," police said.
