A soldier from Light Infantry Battalion 557 based in Auk Kin Village, Tanintharyi Township, Tanintharyi Region, defected while bringing a rifle and ammunition, according to a statement released by KNU - Dooplaya District.
On the morning of July 29, 24-year-old Private Than Naing Lin from Light Infantry Battalion 557 based in Auk Kin Village fled with a rifle and ammunition, defecting to the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) under KNU (Karen National Union) Brigade 6, Dooplaya District, on August 1.
The defecting soldier brought an MA-1 rifle, 5 magazines, and 300 rounds of ammunition. Private Than Naing Lin was warmly welcomed by the KNLA and was awarded cash prizes for recognizing the truth and choosing to defect rather than remain under the oppressive dictatorship.
