Two internally displaced women (IDPs) from Gwa Township, Rakhine State, were the victims of a landmine explosion in the Ayeyarwady Division, which killed one and left the other seriously injured.

The deceased has been identified as Daw Thay Thay (45), while the injured survivor is A Nge Ma (35), according to a displaced man from Gwa who spoke to Narinjara. “The incident happened on the evening of July 24 while they were foraging near Set Set Yo village. Daw Thay Thay died on the spot, and her younger sister sustained serious injuries,” he stated.

The two women were initially displaced from Rakhine State in January 2025 following heavy fighting, seeking refuge in Set Set Yo village, Lay Myint Township, Hinthada District.

Unable to return home due to ongoing bombings and conflict in Gwa, the displaced community has struggled to secure adequate food and drinking water. “To survive, they have to pick wild vegetables from the nearby fields and forests,” the displaced source explained. “That day, they went out to gather yam leaves. They stepped on a landmine planted along the bank of the field.”

The surviving woman is currently receiving medical treatment for her injuries. The landmine was reportedly left behind in an area that served as a temporary military camp during earlier fighting.
