A chemical spill and fire at a Medina, NY produce processing plant Monday morning sent two workers to the hospital and forced an evacuation at the plant. According to local TV station WHAM 13, Medina Fire Department stated it responded at 7:29 a.m. for a report of a male with chemical burns to his face at the Pride Pak plant. Firefighters said a malfunctioning pump released the chemical Bioside HS 15%. One worker was splashed with the chemical, while another was exposed while trying to help and shut down the equipment. Other employees reported seeing a chemical cloud form inside the room, leading crews to clear the building and bring in hazardous materials teams from Niagara and Genesee counties. Crews mitigated the 25-by-10-ft spill, secured the equipment, and cleaned the room while firefighters assisted with ventilation and decontamination. Two people were transported to the hospital, while a third refused treatment on scene. Pride Pak is Canada's largest volume fresh fruit and vegetable processor, its website states. The company has more than 250 employees. The Medina facility opened in 2016 as an organic processing facility that processes a full line of fresh organic greens and vegetables.
